The Meaning of Money

The beauty of money is that it means something different to each of us. For some, it’s about meeting basic needs. For others, it’s power, status, or superiority. If you haven’t asked yourself what money truly means to you, chances are you’re already living within someone else’s definition.

Here’s what it means to me:

  • Tomorrow’s Peace

Money is like stored potential energy, a weapon against uncertainity. It gives you the ability to look ahead without fear of survival, to know you can put food on the table tomorrow.

  • Buying Time

Most of us are trading time for money. A rare few either compound money at unimaginable absolute scale or spend decades working on what they truly love while making money in the same field. For the rest, money buys back discretionary time. The freedom to choose how you spend your hours.

  • Freedom from Toxic People

In a previous post, I touched on personality disorders like NPD and BPD. They’re more common than we think, just rarely diagnosed. Having money gives you leverage to set boundaries, to walk away from those who drain you, manipulate you, or hold you back. On another note, if you hear someone say, “I want to feel superior” or “I like playing status games”, turn around and run as fast as you can. No amount of fixing on your part will heal their unresolved (childhood) trauma.

  • Capital Allocation

At its core, every business is about allocating capital. But you can’t allocate what you don’t have. Money lets you invest in what matters to you, your health, your appearance, your passions etc.

Lxury for the sake of showing off i.e. exotic holidays, flashy lifestyles doesn’t excite me. Those things might matter to you, and that’s fine. In that case, your FU number will likely be much higher. I’d definitely like to spend every penny that I’ve earned before I die.
